He’s laughing at me.

All the while, I stare at the black leather duffle bag at my feet. I push it with the front of my shoe as if it’s made of dirt and the most offensive thing ever to be bestowed upon me.

He wants me to be his fucking banker.

His banker?!

I used to laugh at the poor sod that got this job. It’s grunt work. Even as I grew up, I hated the idea of intimidating money out of naive businesses that would have some dogsbody going in and taking their money.

I’m a lot of things, but I don’t beg for money. I also don’t ask nicely.

Also, the art of intimidation is only fun when it’s a fully grown male who underestimates you. Going after the weak isn’t fun. My father always said that. He maintained that going after people of the same ilk was how we played fair.

“Now, don’t tell me you’ve forgotten the practice of racketeering.”

I can’t resist the death glare that takes hold as I lift my gaze, and while he’s withholding the true amount of laughter he wants to unleash, Sebastian is sniggering freely.

“What you do is-”

“I know what to do, you fucking moron!” I bellow, unleashing my full anger. “What I don’t get is why you’ve given me this job.”

“I told you why the other day.” He takes a step forward. “I told you how you’re mine for the next six months. You do as I tell you.”

I scrutinise him and the situation simultaneously, and both leave a foul taste in my mouth.

“What’s with that look, darling girl?” he questions, pouting with false sympathy. “Did you think one shag was going to secure your spot beside me?”

“No.”

And I didn’t.

I’m not stupid, and the moment he whispered he hated me felt more like a nail in our coffin than anything else.

So, I give him exactly what he doesn’t want—me in his personal space.

Stepping up close to him, my shoulders square harshly and my lips pull straight before I allow a slight smile to lighten my expression.

“Regardless of what you think, babe, I don’t think I have a magical vagina. Much like you don’t have a magical cock.”

I grab him by it just to add severity to my cause.

I giggle as Beckett tries to cool himself. Sebastian steps in, all ready to protect.

“Step the fuck back, Seb. This is nothing to do with you.”

“Seb,” Beckett grunts. “I’ve got this.”

I grin wickedly and apply a small amount of pressure. Slowly, I tilt my head to the side, fixated on watching Beckett sweat a little. His face is reddening with the strain of my hold. I forgot what it felt like to hold the crown jewels, but now I have them, I don’t want to let go.

“T-Talia.”

“Beckett.” I grin harder. “Now, why are you giving me a shit job?”

“You l-like power.”

“I like a lot of things,” I reply sharply. “And scaring fucking nobodies to pay for your protection is not my idea of fun or power.”

“Talia!” he bites harshly. “Let me go.
